Iliev tragedy overshadows title race Wednesday, 14 September 2005
by Stoyan Georgievfrom Sofia
The usual suspects lead the way in the Bulgarian Premier League with PFC Levski Sofia topping the table, though the early part of the season has been overshadowed by the assassination of PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv 1936 president Georgi Iliev.
Top-two encounter Levski began the season in impressive fashion with three wins, but have since dropped four points in their next two matches. The UEFA Cup hopefuls had to come from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw at newly promoted PFC Makedonska Slava, before achieving the same scoreline at home against reigning champions PFC CSKA Sofia in the biggest domestic game of the season so far.
Telkiyski levels CSKA Sofia went into the game on the back of a 5-1 win at PFC Belasitza Petrich and they took the lead through Velizar Dimitrov, only for Levski's Dimitar Telkiyski to reply almost immediately. The draw enabled Levski to stay top, one point ahead of CSKA Sofia who have a game in hand.
Trio waiting However, should Miodrag Ješic's side fail to seize the initiative in their additional match, PFC Slavia Sofia, PFC Lokomotiv Sofia or newcomers PFC Vihren Sandanski are ready to take advantage as they trail the leaders by two points with a game in hand.
Newcomers impress Vihren have made an strong start to the season, thanks to the form of their rejuvenated player-coach Georgi Bachev. Fellow newcomers Pirin have also made steady progress since promotion last season, having already denied Levski victory, as well as winning at UEFA Cup entrants PFC Litex Lovech and PFC Naftex Burgas.
Iliev tragedy However, Iliev's death has dominated headlines, the Plovdiv president having been shot just 40 minutes after watching his side qualify for the UEFA Cup first round. His widow Maya Ilieva has since taken over his club duties. Loko Plovdiv join Levski, Litex and CSKA Sofia in the first round of the UEFA Cup, meaning Bulgaria will be represented by four clubs in the competition for the first time.
Stoyanov steps down Elsewhere, Roumen Stoyanov has resigned as coach of PFC Marek Dupnitza. The club were on the verge of financial collapse during the summer, but the arrival of Yordan Andreev as their new president saved them from relegation to the amateur divisions. However, Marek have struggled so far so this season, taking just four points from five games - leaving them languishing in 12th position.

Hearts take the biscuit Friday, 16 September 2005
by Jim Wirth
Heart of Midlothian FC are the sensation of the season in Scotland, having won all six of their opening games, leaving Old Firm giants Celtic FC and Rangers FC cowering in their wake. Now uefa.com can reveal that the underpinning factor in the Edinburgh side's glory is Jaffa Cakes. Eagle-eyed observers have noticed Hearts players eating the popular biscuit after matches, prompting speculation that the snack - a circular sponge topped in chocolate with an orange flavoured centre - may have played some role in their success. However, Hearts fitness coach Tom Ritchie insists there is a much more sensible explanation. "Players are supposed to eat up to six grams of carbohydrates as soon as possible after each game, so that's why we give them the Jaffa cakes. I'm sure it doesn't have any bearing on the results, but it's not doing any harm either." Undeterred by such logic, other Scottish Premier League sides are said to be experimenting with sweeties of their own. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Tunnocks Caramel Wafers played a major part in Rangers' UEFA Champions League win against FC Porto.
Sierens wails, Yankov aches KSV Roeselare goalkeeper Jürgen Sierens has been having sleepless nights after conceding one of the softest goals in Belgian history. Having been challenged heavily by R. Charleroi SC striker Sébastien Chabaud, the goalkeeper assumed he had been awarded a free-kick and placed the ball accordingly. However, noticing that the referee had not whistled, Charleroi's François Sterchele ran up and stroked the ball into the empty net while Sierens prepared to take his kick and was duly awarded with a goal. "My world collapsed," Sierens said the following day. "I woke up a few times thinking about it last night." Meanwhile, in more painful news, Hannover 96 midfielder Chavdar Yankov was left with a nasty memento of his side's 2-0 Bundesliga win against Eintracht Frankfurt as a meeting with an opponent's studs bequeathed him a four-centimetre gash down the side of his penis. "I didn't really realise what had happened until I saw my shorts covered in blood," explained the Bulgarian international, who played on but had to have six stitches to repair the damage after the match. "I didn't go out to celebrate after the match. I didn't sleep very well at all."
Champagne supper for Nantes Fed up with paying for additional security for away supporters, ES Troyes Aube Champagne president Thierry Gomez has vowed "a new philosophy to others's fans" saying: "We want to welcome them as friends." Thus, last weekend, FC Nantes Atlantique fans were treated to a drink and a choice of free sandwiches while being generously applauded by home supporters at the Stade de l'Aube. "We hope this will help other sides to do the same and to have less security in football," Gomez said. Finally in Azerbaijan, FK Khazar Lenkoran president Mubariz Mansimov is threatening to have less football in football after resigning from his post. Having brought a number of Azeri internationals to Khazar at the start of the season, prompting fans to call the team 'the Azeri Galacticos', Mansimov has been infuriated by a string of poor results - and, he claimed, unfair treatment by the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA). "There is some blame on the player who failed to create a single goalscoring chance throughout the whole match," he fumed after a defeat against FK Inter Baku. "But I am warning AFFA. If their unjust attitude towards us continues, I will disband the team and convert the Lenkoran stadium into a farm."

Then, on 22 September, Wales is the venue for Group 12, which also includes Switzerland - who reached the group stage in the 2005 finals - Estonia and Kazakhstan. The following day, mini-tournament hosts Andorra's game with Iceland marks the opening fixtures in Group 6, with Sweden and the Czech Republic also meeting on that first day.
Hungarian hopes Hungary will hope to capitalise on home advantage to progress from Group 10, which also incorporates Albania, Cyprus and Scotland, with the action beginning on 26 September. Two sections start a day later, with Lithuania and Ukraine the locations. Northern Ireland, Malta and Serbia and Montenegro join the Lithuanians in Group 1, while Italy - third on home soil last May - Latvia and Republic of Ireland travel to Ukraine for Group 2.
Familiar foes On 29 September, two of the qualifiers from Italy are involved again as the Netherlands - runners-up in the 2005 finals - and mini-tournament hosts Belarus, who were unable to progress beyond the group stage last season, contest Group 11 with Denmark and Slovenia.
Semi-final rematch The remaining four sections will be concluded in the second half of October, with 2003 champions Portugal facing Germany in Group 5 when the pair will be confident of progressing with San Marino and the Faroe Islands forming the opposition. Across Europe, Group 9 kicks off in F.Y.R. Macedonia on 16 October, which will feature a rematch of the semi-final between Croatia and Turkey from this year's event. Romania are the fourth side in what looks to be a strong section.

The qualifying round is completed on 28 October as Group 4, which features hosts Israel - who lost all three matches in Italy having unexpectedly qualified - Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia. Spain, England - the only one of the three to qualify for last season's finals - and France will enter the tournament in the Elite round, which takes place next spring. The eight-team final tournament is to be held in Luxembourg from 3 to 14 May 2006.

Todorov shares CSKA credit Friday, 16 September 2005
by Pawel Dimow & Stoyan Georgievfrom Sofia
PFC CSKA Sofia wrote another glorious chapter in their history on Thursday night when they recorded their first win in Germany against Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
Todorov strike Striker Yordan Todorov was the hero, exploiting a defensive error to score the only goal of the game after 15 minutes, but he was eager to share the credit with his team-mates. "Everybody is a hero for CSKA, not just me," he said. "I anticipated Athirson's mistake and took advantage. That's why I'm so happy."
Press acclaim The Bulgarian press did not question Todorov's assessment. Sports paper 7 Days said: "The priceless goal was scored by Yordan Todorov but the whole team was great." Meanwhile, Meridian Match could see the gravity of the occasion, calling the win "a historic success for Bulgarian football".
Travelling in style CSKA have been impressive on their travels in Europe this season, securing wins at KF Tirana and Liverpool FC in UEFA Champions League qualifying and now this latest victory against the 2001/02 Champions League finalists. This win was certainly a mark of the 30-time Bulgarian champions' resilience.
Excellent spirit For defender Valentin Iliev, that came down to an excellent team spirit and the willingness of all players to help out at the back. "It was very tough for us but the most important thing is that we won," he said. "The whole team defended very well and the midfielders and forwards helped us a lot."
Ješić impressed The club's Serbo-Montenegrin coach Miodrag Ješić, known as 'The General', was impressed with his side. "Today the boys have shown again that they are a big team. We have done half of our job. We will do our best in the second leg and I hope CSKA can qualify for the group stage."
Renovated squad Ješic has masterminded major changes to the CSKA squad in recent months, bringing in the likes of Mourad Hdiouad, Guillaume Dah Zadi, Sergej Jakirović and goalkeeper Dejan Maksić to piece together a team with plenty of talent and a particular strength in midfield.
Good goalkeeping Maksić was the hero with five minutes to go when he pulled off a fine save from Juan as Leverkusen threatened to draw level. "I guessed Juan's intentions and saved his shot," he said. "Now I hope we will reach the group stage. If we play like today we will not have any problems."
Return leg As they look ahead to the second leg, CSKA have the comfort of knowing they have scored in their last eleven European games. Ješić, however, knows they can expect a Leverkusen backlash in Bulgaria. "German teams never surrender and we must show the same level of commitment during the return leg," he warned.

De Jong aiming to leave Ajax Wednesday, 7 December 2005
Nigel de Jong has announced he intends to leave AFC Ajax at the season's end. "My thinking is that I have to make this step in my career, and this is what I will do," the Dutch international midfielder said. He added that he has had no contact with other clubs as he wanted to inform Ajax first. The 21-year-old has scored eight goals in 91 Eredivisie games for Ajax.
German Bundesliga outfit Bayer 04 Leverkusen have signed Czech Under-21 international Michal Papadopulos from FC Baník Ostrava for an undisclosed fee. The forward has agreed a deal until June 2009. "We are delighted we were able to sign him," said Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Völler. "He is very strong in the air and very quick - a typical striker." Leaving the club, however, is German Under-19 international Sascha Dum. The teenager will join 2. Bundesliga team TSV Alemannia Aachen on an 18-month loan from January.
FC Barcelona's Spanish international midfielder Xavi Hernández faces a confirmed six-month absence following surgery on a cruciate knee ligament injury, but remains confident of recovering in time for the FIFA World Cup. "There are many months until the World Cup," he said. "I have spoken to [Spain coach] Luis Aragonés. He told me he's counting on me."
The draw has been made for the last 16 of the Spanish Cup, with the following ties to be played over two legs on 4 and 11 January: Villarreal CF v Valencia CF, RC Celta de Vigo v Real Betis Balompié, Getafe CF v RCD Espanyol, RC Deportivo La Coruña v CA Osasuna, Cádiz CF v Sevilla FC, Athletic Club Bilbao v Real Madrid CF, Zamora CF v FC Barcelona, Club Atlético de Madrid v Real Zaragoza.
Bulgarian international striker Martin Kamburov will join United Arab Emirates side Al-Ahli from PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv 1936. The 25-year-old, Bulgaria's top scorer for the last two seasons, has signed a four-and-a-half year contract and will move in January. "I am happy with the deal," said the former PFC Spartak Pleven player who has registered 73 goals for Plovdiv.
Sergei Borovski has been appointed coach of Belarussian club FC Dinamo Brest. The 49-year-old has inked a one-year contract to replace Mikhail Markhel, with an option for a further year. Borovski is a former Belarus national team coach. He arrives from FK Vetra, whom he guided to fourth place in Lithuania this year.
R. Charleroi SC midfielder Sébastien Chabaud is unlikely to play again this season after tearing ligaments in his right knee. The 28-year-old was injured during Saturday's Belgian First Division match against RAA Louvièroise and doctors estimate his recovery time at six months.
Goalkeeper Oscar Moens of Dutch Eredivisie side Willem II is to undergo surgery on damaged tendons in his foot and will be out until January. The 32-year-old had his foot put in plaster two weeks ago, but it has not healed as expected and he faces a further four-week lay-off.
UEFA Cup contenders AFC Rapid Bucuresti are the only Romanian club still fighting on three fronts after reaching the Romanian Cup semi-finals. Rapid beat CS Politehnica Iasi 1-0 with a stoppage-time goal from Robert Ilyes. Elsewhere, FC Politehnica AEK Timisoara lost 3-2 to FC Petrolul Ploiesti, FC Farul Constanta defeated CS Jiul Petrosani 1-0, while FC National Bucuresti edged past FC Otelul Galati on penalties.
Luxembourg's most successful club, AS Jeunesse Esch, have sacked coach Harald Kohr. The German had been in charge since the summer but had reportedly fallen out with several players. Jeunesse Esch are third in the table after 14 rounds.

Re: Bułgarskie Wiadomości Pilkarskie [ENG] UEFA.com
Pupil puts pressure on Petrović Friday, 9 December 2005
by Stoyan Georgievfrom Sofia
Coach Stanimir Stoilov will come face to face with his mentor Ljupko Petrović as PFC Levski Sofia take on PFC Litex Lovech in a must-win game on Friday.
Stalking horses The biggest match in Bulgaria is traditionally the meeting of capital rivals PFC CSKA Sofia and Levski - the country's two most successful clubs. However, since 1997, a side from outside Sofia has been regularly challenging the metropolis's mightiest teams.
Recent arrivals Up until then, Litex - formerly known as Osam or Karpachev Lovech - had won nothing and played most of their football in the second division. However, since the arrival of major shareholder Grisha Ganchev, they have landed two league championships and two Bulgarian Cups.
Off the pace Litex look unlikely to claim a third title this term, trailing Premier League leaders CSKA by 14 points, but Friday's visit of Levski could prove a pivotal moment in the championship race. Seven points adrift of CSKA, if second-placed Levski fail to win they will all but hand the crown to their arch-rivals.
UEFA Cup joy Games between Litex and Levski have been tense affairs in recent years and this season's should be no exception to that rule. With both sides having enjoyed excellent autumn campaigns in the UEFA Cup, qualifying for the last 32, they will approach the tie in confident mood.
Neutral territory The match will be played on neutral territory in Sevlievo as Litex received a one-game stadium ban after a supporter attacked referee Angel Angelov during their previous home fixture. The Bulgarian Football Union has also appointed a German referee, Franz Xaver Wack, to officiate.
Added spice Extra spice will be added by the relationship between Levski coach Stoilov and his Litex counterpart Petrović, who led Levski in 1999/00 and 2000/01 and made it clear at the time that his captain - Stoilov - was destined to coach the club one day.
Former mentor He was right. Petrović, who won the European Champion Clubs' Cup in charge of FK Crvena Zvezda in 1990/91, is pleased to see his charge doing well. "I hope Stanimir can surpass my achievements," said the 58-year-old, in his second spell at Litex. "He is hard-working and has the ability to succeed."
Petrović confident However, while Stoilov's Levski are above Litex in the table, the Serbo-Montenegrin is in no doubt his team have the ability to spoil Stoilov's day. "If we play the right way, we will win," he said. "I hope we will see a quality game and I want to see maximum effort from my players."
Stoilov calm Stoilov, 38, was eager to ease the pressure on his side, saying: "Even if we drop points against Litex, I do not think the title race with CSKA will be over. Our fixture list for the second half of the season is quite easy, while CSKA have some tough away games and the lead could be cut."
Injury fears Levski's Lucio Wagner and Igor Tomašić are both expected to line up in Sevlievo despite carrying minor knocks, while Litex's Slovenian striker Milivoje Novakovič hopes to shake off a cold before kick-off. "Both teams know each other very well and I expect no surprises," said Stoilov.

Novakovič spikes Levski's guns Friday, 9 December 2005
by Stoyan Georgievfrom Sofia
e-mailPrint
Bulgarian title pretenders PFC Levski Sofia suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season as a late Milivoje Novakovič goal gave PFC Litex Lovech a 1-0 win in the match of the weekend.
Highest jump The Slovenian striker rose highest to meet Robert Popov's cross with seven minutes remaining and give coach Ljupko Petrović victory against his former club on neutral territory in Sevlievo, with Litex serving a one-match home ban.
Goalkeeping hero However, the real hero of the game was Litex's giant goalkeeper Vitomir Vutov who helped the provincial upstarts to survive huge pressure. Vutov made terrific, point-blank saves to deny Daniel Bormirov, Hristo Yovov and Emil Angelov in the second half.
Red card German referee Franz Xaver Wack gave Levski hope when he dismissed Litex's Alejandro Cichero after 88 minutes for an elbow on Milan Koprivarov, but Stanimir Stoilov's team were unable to press their advantage and narrow the gap on leaders PFC CSKA Sofia.
Levski position "I could not ask for more from my players," said Stoilov. "We were looking for the win but were unlucky in front of goal. Then we made one mistake and got punished. Now we trail CSKA by seven points, but we will try to cut that lead in the second half of the season."
Coach's tribute Meanwhile, the Litex coach paid tribute to his goalkeeper. "Levski played better than us but we had a fantastic goalkeeper," Petrović said. "Vutov made at least three great saves and we won thanks to him." Like Levski, Litex are through to the UEFA Cup knockout phase.

Winter brings joy for CSKA Monday, 12 December 2005
by Stoyan Georgievfrom Sofia
Reigning champions PFC CSKA Sofia look to be on the way to a 31st Bulgarian title after going into the winter break seven points clear at the top of the table.
Still unbeaten Yet to be beaten in the league, with 13 defeats and just one draw - a 1-1 against their arch-rivals, second-placed PFC Levski Sofia - they have been in awesome form. They have scored 53 league goals and signed off for the autumn in style with a 6-0 win against PFC Vihren Sandanski.
Final steps This week, the club can also complete their passage to the last 32 of the UEFA Cup. Should Miodra Ješić's side get the result they need against AS Monaco FC, it would complete a tremendous European autumn for Bulgarian sides, with all three UEFA Cup representatives progressing through the group stage.
Levski shock Levski did well in the UEFA Cup but go into the winter break on something of a sour note after losing their first league game of the season 1-0 against fellow UEFA Cup contenders PFC Litex Lovech on 9 December. Ljupko Petrović's Litex are in fine form having climbed up to fourth in the table.
Lokomotiv buoyant Experienced coach Stefan Grozdanov has managed to lead PFC Lokomotiv Sofia into third place in the table in the autumn to boost their chances of snaring a European finish in the spring. Just three points adrift of Levski, they also boast one of the season's rising stars in Tsvetan Genkov.
Vihren surprise Vihren ended their autumn campaign being mauled by CSKA, but they remain the surprise package of the season so far having hauled their way into tenth place. Some credit for that can go to Portuguese forward José Emilio Furtado who has scored ten goals. However, he is expected to join CSKA in the winter.
Star player PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv 1936 are fifth in the table and still recovering from the assassination of club president Georgi Iliev back in August and the sacking of coach Eduard Eranosyan in October. Having seen their star player Martin Kamburov join Al-Ahli of the United Arab Emirates, they may be in for a tough spring.
Grim spring Not, however, as tough as the one that awaits once-mighty PFC Naftex Bourgas who are rooted to the foot of the table. They look set for an ugly scrap to avoid relegation along with PFC Marek Dupnitza, PFC Pirin 1922 and PFC Rodopa Smolian.

CSKA swoop for Lokomotiv four Wednesday, 21 December 2005
Bulgarian leaders PFC CSKA Sofia have signed four players from rivals PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv 1936. Defenders Aleksandar Tunchev and Kiril Kotev, and midfielders Georgi Iliev and Daniel Georgiev, are all internationals and could be joined by Portuguese striker José Furtado of PFC Vihren Sandanski. "We are delighted to have them on board. We have tracked them for a long time," said CSKA director Stefan Orma.
Club Atlético de Madrid have been fined €6,000 after a section of their support racially abused RCD Espanyol goalkeeper Carlos Kaméni during a league match on 27 November. The Spanish Football Federation acted after a complaint from the government-run anti-violence commission which estimated that 500 fans had been involved in the incidents.
German Bundesliga side 1. FC Köln have appointed Michael Meier as football director, four days after the resignation of Andreas Rettig. The 56-year-old, who until last summer was BV Borussia Dortmund's general manager, has agreed a four-year deal and his first task will be to find a replacement for coach Uwe Rapolder who was sacked at the weekend.
Holders PSV Eindhoven have qualified for the Dutch Cup quarter-finals after a 3-0 victory against FC Twente. A Jefferson Farfán strike and two second-half goals from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink were enough to send the UEFA Champions League contenders through, along with SC Heerenveen, Helmond Sport and MVV Maastricht. The other quarter-finalists will be confirmed on Wednesday and Thursday night.
Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC have appointed Ton Kannen as coach until the end of the season, filling the gap left by Nir Klinger's departure a fortnight ago. Dutchman Kannen left Beitar Jerusalem FC last week. Underachieving Maccabi are fifth in Israel with 20 points from 14 matches, 20 behind runaway leaders Maccabi Haifa FC. "I intend to challenge Haifa's dominance," Kannen said.
Highly-regarded left-sided defender Søren Jensen is leaving Viborg FF to join Danish Superliga rivals Odense BK on a three-year contract from 1 January. "I see them as a really interesting club who will probably be at the top of Danish football in the future," the 21-year-old said.
Sporting Clube de Portugal were 3-0 home winners against Rio Ave FC last night in the Portuguese Liga. Brazilian striker Liedson scored twice while defender Tonel was also on target. Sporting have moved to 30 points, four behind leaders FC Porto who play on Thursday.
Charlton Athletic FC defender Mark Fish has announced his retirement having failed to overcome a persistent knee injury. The 31-year-old, who won 62 caps for South Africa, aggravated the injury in August while on loan at Ipswich Town FC, and has now admitted defeat in his battle to play again.
Multiplex Group, the contractors building the new Wembley stadium in London, have said there is a "material risk" the venue may not be finished in time to stage the 2006 FA Cup final on 13 May. The English national stadium is being completely rebuilt after the original was closed in 2000. It is thought Hungary may be the first international visitors for a friendly on 30 May.
Croatian club NK Slaven Koprivnica have appointed Elvis Scoria as coach following a board meeting. The 34-year-old, who was in charge at HNK Rijeka until he resigned in October, will replace Nikola Jurčević. Slaven began the season under Branko Karačić but he left after four games.
Rangers FC midfielder Gavin Rae will make his comeback on Thursday after 20 months out with a series of knee injuries. The 28-year-old former Dundee FC player will appear in a specially arranged friendly along with fellow returnees Nacho Novo and Federico Nieto.

HNK Hajduk Split have signed midfielders Ivan Režic and Mirko Hrgovic until the season's end. Formerly with NK Varteks and Olympiacos CFP, the 26-year-old ex-Croatian international Režic was a free agent. Bosnia-Herzegovina's Hrgovic, also 26 and without a club, lists VfL Wolfsburg and NK Široki Brijeg among his previous sides. Another piece of business done in Croatia was NK Dinamo Zagreb extending the contract of Under-21 international midfielder Vedran Ćorluka until the summer of 2011.
Dutch outfit FC Twente have announced the capture of Jerônimo Daneluz Soares. The 19-year-old Brazilian midfielder comes in from EC Juventude in his homeland on a six-month loan, with Twente having the option of a permanent transfer in the summer.
Danish side AGF Århus have brought striker Peter Graulund back to the club where he scored 14 goals in 33 games during a successful loan spell between 2003 and 2004. The 29-year-old returns home after stints with VfL Bochum 1848 and Helsingborgs IF. "Peter Graulund has always been high on my wish list," said AGF coach Ove Pedersen.
Bulgarian champions PFC CSKA Sofia have signed Yannick Boumsong, younger brother of France and Newcastle United defender Jean-Alain Boumsong. Formerly with AJ Auxerre, Boumsong Jr, 21, has inked a two-and-a-half year deal with CSKA with an option for a further 12 months.

FC Arsenal Kyiv have reinforced their squad with four new recruits, including three from FC Dynamo Kyiv. The Ukrainian Premier League's 15th-placed side have taken Ukrainian international Vitaliy Riva and defenders Oleksandr Romanchuk, 21, and Andriy Bashlay, 20, on loan from Dynamo till the season's end. FC Metalurh Donetsk striker Oleksandr Alekseenko, meanwhile, joins Arsenal on a free transfer having agreed a one-year contract.

FC Sopron have been busy in the transfer market, landing two Hungarian internationals. Goalkeeper Balázs Rabóczki returns home from FC København in Denmark with the 28-year-old agreeing a contract until 2009. Dutch outfit NEC Nijmegen have announced the signing of David Jones from Manchester United FC. The 21-year-old midfielder comes on loan for the remainder of the Eredivisie campaign.
Scottish Premier League team Falkirk FC have successfully appealed to secure a work permit for Trinidad and Tobago international Densill Theobold. The 22-year-old midfielder was initially turned down because he did not fulfil the criteria of playing the desired number of internationals, but a letter from Trinidad and Tobago coach Leo Beenhakker helped to reverse the decision.

Grasshoppers leap for Balakov Monday, 16 January 2006
by Marco Keller & Stoyan Georgievfrom Zurich & Sofia
Former Bulgarian international Krassimir Balakov has been named as Hanspeter Latour's replacement as coach of Swiss side Grasshopper-Club.
Challenge accepted The Zurich side have announced that the 1994 FIFA World Cup semi-finalist has signed a contract to coach the club until the end of the 2006/07 season, ending a period of uncertainty at Grasshoppers. Latour decided to leave the Swiss side in early January to accept the challenge of coaching German outfit 1. FC Köln.
'The ideal man' Club president Walter Brunner was delighted to announce the arrival of the 39-year-old Balakov, saying: "We are very happy that Balakov has accepted this challenge and are convinced that we will be able to follow our strategy with him. He is the ideal man for our club."
Encouraging progress While Grasshoppers are in third place in the Swiss league, a full 12 points adrift of champions and current leaders FC Basel 1893, progress was encouraging in the 12 months they spent under the charismatic Latour, who led them to the group stages of this season's UEFA Cup.
Combative style Grasshoppers lost all four of their Group D games, albeit all by one-goal margins, but had high hopes of pressing for a top-two league finish in the spring under Latour and a return to Europe in 2006/07. Meanwhile, their combative style appealed to fans in Zurich.
Careful policy With a policy of keeping spending under control and avoiding some of the excesses of recent seasons, Grasshoppers can boast the best defence in Swiss football at the moment, but will be hoping that their new coach can do something to add spice to a misfiring forward line in the spring.
Coaching credentials Balakov, who has brought in VfB Stuttgart second team coach Rainer Widmayer as his assistant, will be eager to prove his worth at his new club having earned his coaching spurs as an assistant to two of Germany's top coaches at Stuttgart: Matthias Sammer and Felix Magath.
Playing career Balakov started his career with his hometown side FC Etar Veliko Turnovo but his prodigious skills soon earned the playmaker an international reputation. He signed for PFC CSKA Sofia in 1990 but did not play a single game for Bulgaria's most successful side before his transfer was cancelled and he returned to Etar.
Sporting switch However, he was not to stay with them for long as he was sold to Sporting Clube de Portugal in December 1990. Etar won their first and only Bulgarian title without him in 1990/91, but Balakov had bigger fish to fry as he slotted in alongside Luís Figo at Sporting.
World Cup success A Portuguese Cup winner with Sporting in 1994/95, Balakov earned plenty of accolades at Sporting - not least among them the club's 1992 Player of the Year award - but his finest houe came as he was named in the tournament's Best XI as Bulgaria reached the semi-finals of the 1994 World Cup in the United States.
Enhanced reputation With an enhanced reputation, Balakov moved on to Stuttgart in June 1995 and was to form a formidable triumvirate alongside Giovane Elber and Fredi Bobic, leading the club to a German Cup triumph in 1996/97 and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final in 1997/98.
International career In total, he won 93 caps for Bulgaria and scored 16 goals before retiring. Only current Bulgarian Football Union president Borislav Mihailov (102) and Hristo Bonev (96) earned more than the 1995 and 1997 Bulgarian Player of the Year.

Transfer frenzy at CSKA Sofia Tuesday, 24 January 2006
by Stoyan Georgievfrom Sofia
The in and out doors have been swinging at PFC CSKA Sofia as the Bulgarian giants prepare to restart the season with a new-look defence.
Outward bound Coach Miodrag Ješić could afford to be unconcerned when Serbo-Montenegrin goalkeeper Dejan Maksić and Senegalese defender Ibrahima Gueye moved to Turkish side Samsunspor while Slovakian international right-back Radoslav Zabavník joined Czech team AC Slavia Praha, having already lined up replacements.
Incoming players Oliver Kovacević will replace his countryman Maksić in goal, signing on a free transfer after starting the campaign in Turkey with Samsunspor, while defenders Aleksandar Tunchev, Kiril Kotev and Daniel Georgiev were among four players – including Georgi Iliev – recruited from PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv 1936.
Serbian signing Left-back Aleksandar Mutavdzić, who has played for FK Rad as well as Belgian clubs KFC Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen and R. Standard de Liège, will provide further competition in defence, while Portuguese striker José Emilio Furtado will give CSKA another attacking option after arriving from PFC Vihren Sandanski.
Quiet winter PFC Levski Sofia have been having a quiet winter as they prepare for their UEFA Cup meeting with FC Artmedia. Coach Stanimir Stoilov has kept faith with his squad while captain Elin Topuzakov is still on board despite receiving a good offer from Russia's FC Luch-Energia Vladivostok - who have just won promotion to the Premier-Liga.
Litex moves Bulgaria's other UEFA Cup participant, PFC Litex Lovech, have brought in defender Martin Kovachev from PFC Spartak Varna and have also landed Bosnia-Herzegovnian midfielder Vladan Grujić, who has played for FK Crvena Zvezda, 1. FC Köln and FC Alania Vladikavkaz.
Foreign climes Other moves have seen PFC Slavia Sofia captain Blagoi Georgiev join Spanish Primera División strugglers Deportivo Alavés on loan until the season's end, and PFC Lokomotiv Sofia's former Bulgarian international Svetoslav Petrov switch to Azerbaijani champions PFC Neftchi.
Botev roundabout PFC Botev Plovdiv have named their third coach of the season, with Atanas Marinov taking over after they failed to reach terms with Italian Corrado Cotta. Yassen Petrov and Trifon Pachev have already crashed and burned this term.
Bachev reconciled Finally, PFC Marek Dupnitza have taken on Stoyan Kotsev to replace coach Sasho Pargov while Georgi Bachev has settled his differences with Vihren Sandanski president Kostadin Dinev and returns to his post as player-coach two months after walking out.

Petrov plumps for Celtic extension Friday, 27 January 2006
Bulgaria captain Stilian Petrov has ended speculation about his future at Celtic FC by extending his contract by two years until the summer of 2009, with an option for an extra season.
'Quality player' The 26-year-old midfielder's decision to stay in Glasgow is a major boost for Celtic as they bid to regain the Scottish title they lost to Rangers FC on the final day of last term. "Everyone at the club is delighted we have secured the services of such a quality player," said chief executive Peter Lawwell.
'High ambitions' "The Celtic board is pleased to retain such a talent at Celtic Park and we will continue to do all we can to support the manager in his plans for the future. This signing confirms the board's high ambitions." Petrov, who has played more than 250 matches for Celtic after arriving from PFC CSKA Sofia in 1999, could extend the deal by another 12 months if both parties agree.
