Naftex sack coaching duo Sunday, 7 November 2004
Bulgarian side PFC Naftex Burgas have sacked coach Salvatore Bianchetti after a string of poor results left them languishing near the foot of the table.
Disappointing season Bianchetti was appointed in June along with fellow Italian Claudio Maselli, as replacements for Dimitar Dimitrov who could only take the team to an eighth-place finish last term. But after a disappointing start to the season, with just two wins from 12 games, Naftex lie tenth in the table and the club's board have decided that a major shake-up is required on the playing side.
Scoglio departs Ognyan Ralev will take charge on a temporary basis until the end of the season, while Maselli will remain at the club in another capacity. Another Italian, technical director Francesco Scoglio, has also parted company with Naftex, who sit just a point above the relegation places.

Samokovliyski resigns at Pirin Sunday, 7 November 2004
Yordan Samokovliyski has resigned as coach of Bulgarian side PFC Pirin Blagoevgrad following a succession of disappointing results.
Lokomotiv loss The 54-year-old, who guided Pirin to promotion last season, made his decision after the side's 4-1 loss to reigning champions PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv on Saturday. That result leaves Pirin eleventh, just three points above relegation.
Coaching casualties "I'm disappointed with our recent performances so I have decided to leave," said Samokovliyski. He becomes the latest in a rash of coaching casualties in the Bulgarian top flight and comes in the same week as the departure of Stoicho Mladenov from Bulgarian Cup holders PFC Litex Lovech and Salvatore Bianchetti from PFC Naftex Burgas.

Sofia clubs set the pace Tuesday, 9 November 2004
By Stoyan Georgiev
Early pacesetters PFC CSKA Sofia have dropped their first points of the season in the last four weeks and find themselves level with PFC Levski Sofia.
Derby date The most significant match of the campaign to date came on 17 October when the two capital clubs met. Home side CSKA took a two-goal lead but allowed Levski to battle back for a 2-2 draw. CSKA then lost another two points with a repeat scoreline at PFC Marek Dupnitza last Sunday, but this time required an equaliser of their own.
Ognyanov emergence CSKA have been joined on 32 points by Levski after their 4-1 success against PFC Spartak Varna on Saturday. Leading the way for Levski is 16-year-old midfielder Mariyan Ognyanov, who has featured in the last two games and scored twice against Spartak Varna.
Up to third Another team on the rise are PFC Slavia Sofia. After early defeats by Levski and CSKA, new Bulgarian internationals Blagoy Georgiev, Chavdar Yankov and Dimitar Rangelov have propelled the club to third place although there is still an eight-point gap to the leaders.
Kamburov class Champions PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv are a further point adrift. However, one positive for them is the continued good form of Martin Kamburov, including a hat-trick in the 4-3 win against PFC Litex Lovech on 16 October. The club's sporting manager Hristo Bonev has left after a dispute with coach Eduard Eranosyan.
Mladenov departure Cup holders Litex have seen their title ambitions dented by defeat in two crucial away games, that 4-3 defeat by Loko Plovdiv and then a 3-1 reverse at CSKA on 31 October. Those results led to the end of Stoicho Mladenov's reign after just four months at the helm.
All change The managerial merry-go-round continued at PFC Naftex Burgas. With just one point separating the team from the relegation zone, Naftex parted with manager Francesco Schollio and joint-coach Claudio Maselli, with his partner Salvatore Bianchetti being moved into another position. Ognyan Radev has temporary charge of first-team matters.
Looking up Finally, newcomers PFC Pirin Blagoevgrad, in eleventh, are also without a coach as Yordan Samokolvliiski resigned after the 4-1 home defeat by Loko Plovdiv on Saturday. Spartak Varna remain bottom despite a 1-0 home success against PFC Cherno More Varna on 30 October. The once-mighty PFC Lokomotiv Sofia are just two points better off, but have improved under Stefan Grozdanov.

Re: Bułgarskie Wiadomości Pilkarskie [ENG] UEFA.com
Litex land successful Shum Monday, 15 November 2004 PFC Litex Lovech have pulled off a coup by appointing Itzhak Shum as their new coach.
Excellent spell The 56-year-old Israeli enhanced his reputation with an excellent spell at Panathinaikos FC which came to an acrimonious end in October. Shum, who had led the Athenians to the Greek double, including their first title in eight years, was reported to have differences with Panathinaikos team manager Velimir Zajec on a number of issues.
No hope Shum will now turn his hand to Bulgarian football with Litex in fifth position, 13 points behind the leaders PFC CSKA Sofia after 13 games. The Lovech-based side have no real hope of silverware this season after being eliminated from the UEFA Cup by Grazer AK and the Bulgarian Cup.
Looking forward "I've signed a one-and-a-half year contract," said Shum. "We have to work hard this season and then next year go for the title. I believe we will put a very good squad together." Both the new coach and Litex president Grisha Ganchev said there will be wholesale changes to the playing and technical staff.
Replaces Mladenov Shum, who joined Panathinaikos in June 2003 after a successful period in charge of Maccabi Haifa FC, replaces Stoicho Mladenov. The former Bulgaria coach was sacked two weeks ago.

Azerbaijan youngsters impress Wednesday, 17 November 2004 By Erkin Ibragimov
Azerbaijan 0-0 Bulgaria Azerbaijan coach Carlos Alberto Torres gave debuts to five players and his young side responded impressively with some fine attacking football in a goalless draw with Bulgaria in a friendly match at the Tofik Bakhramov stadium in Baku.
New faces In the absence of several regulars, the Brazilian used the break from FIFA World Cup qualifiers to try out a number of untested youngsters. Rauf Mekhtiev, Daniel Akhtyamov and Elmar Bakhshiev all made their debuts in the starting XI, Ilgar Abdurahmanov and Vugar Guliyev were named among the substitutes, and 18-year-old Vugar Nadyrov and Zaur Gashymov, 23, were both picked for just the second time.
All change However, the home team were without Jahangir Hasanzade, Makhmud and Gurban Gurbanov, Samir Aliyev, Aslan Kerimov and 22-year-old captain Rashad Sadygov, who has been in impressive form as sweeper this year. Stilian Petrov was missing for Bulgaria who named an otherwise full-strength side.
Ponomarev comes close Azerbaijan had the best of the early exchanges. Kyamal Guliyev and Makhir Shukurov were full of confidence on the wings, while the tall Akhtyamov worried the Bulgaria defence and his strike partner Zaur Ramazanov threatened with his darting runs. Azerbaijan's best chance came on 29 minutes when Anatoliy Ponomarev's shot from a cleverly taken corner was cleared off the goalline.
'Fair result' Bulgaria seized the momentum after the break, and Valeri Bozhinov and Dimitar Berbatov both looked dangerous in front of Mekhtiev's goal, but Azerbaijan were able to hold on for the draw. "Both teams played well, and I think the result is fair," Torres said.
Next up Azerbaijan, bottom of World Cup qualifying Group 6, return to competitive action against Poland in Warsaw on 26 March, while Bulgaria, second in Group 8, take on section leaders Sweden the same day.

Frankowski shoots way to top Monday, 29 November 2004 The race for the 2004/05 ESM Golden Shoe is firmly under way with last season's winner Thierry Henry in prolific mood once again.
Thierry Henry has been among the goals Strong challenge With the halfway stage of the season approaching, Wisla Kraków striker Tomasz Frankowski and Rosenborg BK forward Frode Johnsen are setting the pace although the latter's season has now concluded. Frankowski, however, has scored 19 goals in just 13 Polish league games to date and could provide a strong challenge.
Closing in Henry drew a blank at the weekend when Arsenal FC went down 2-1 at Liverpool FC but still has eleven goals to his name. Because, in the ESM standings, goals in the Premiership are multiplied by two, as opposed to 1.5 in the Ekstraklasa, Henry would need to score four more to overtake Frankowski. Marek Mintál, the 1. FC Nürnberg forward, would require a Bundesliga hat-trick to do the same, provided of course Frankowski did not add to his tally.

Only the leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) on the UEFA Ranking have two as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in international performance level between clubs from those countries and those from the other countries.
A player cannot first play in a summer league (eg Norway) and then in a winter league (eg Spain) and combine the points total for each season.

Gargorov saves Stoitchkov record Monday, 29 November 2004 Egypt 1-1 Bulgaria A 92nd-minute goal from PFC CSKA Sofia midfield player Emil Gargorov earned Bulgaria a draw in Cairo and extended Hristo Stoitchkov's unbeaten record as coach to six games.
Composed equaliser Egypt had taken the lead through Emad Meteab on 85 minutes, but deep into injury time Gargorov collected possession following a corner and levelled with a fine shot.
Unbeaten run Stoitchkov began his career as Bulgaria coach with two wins and a draw in FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 8, while friendly internationals against the Republic of Ireland and Azerbaijan ended in draws. For the trip to Cairo, Stoitchkov opted to select only home-based players with the exception of young VfB Stuttgart striker Ivan Stoianov.
Super stop Egypt started the game in confident mood and soon threatened Bulgaria's defence, forcing goalkeeper Dimitar Ivankov to be constantly vigilant. The hosts had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 24th minute when PFC Levski Sofia defender Elin Topuzakov brought down Shalki in the penalty area. Mohamed Barakat stepped up to the take the penalty, but his shot was superbly saved by Ivankov.
Messy moment Egypt continued to dominate, but Ivankov and second-half substitute Stoian Kolev kept them at bay until the final stages. In the 85th minute the African side finally broke through, Meteab scoring after a penalty-box scramble. That goal looked to have earned Egypt victory, only for Gargorov to deny them at the last.
'Useful friendly' "I am delighted with the result in what proved to be a useful friendly," said Stoitchkov, who took over after Bulgaria lost all three games at UEFA EURO 2004™. "But there is still a lot to be done."

Hopefuls discover first opponents Tuesday, 30 November 2004 A number of intriguing encounters are in the offing following the draw for the qualifying round of the 2005/06 UEFA European Under-17 Championship in Luxembourg, which took place at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon on Tuesday afternoon.
Lithuania are drawn out by Jean-Pierre Escalettes Twelve groups Of the 51 competing member associations, 48 will take part in the first stage of the competition, with the top three sides in UEFA's coefficient rankings - England, Spain and France - progressing automatically to the Elite round, leaving the remaining sides to be divided into 12 pools of four. The top two sides in each group and best third-placed side overall go through to Elite round.
Illustrious names The draw was hosted by UEFA technical director Andy Roxburgh, assisted by Jim Boyce, chairman of the UEFA Youth and Amateur Football Committee, Jean-Pierre Escalettes, vice-chairman of the same organisation, and Lausanne-Sports' Swiss Under-20 international midfield player Richemond Rak.
Richemond Rak mixes the balls during the draw Fair Play award Before the draw started, Escalettes collected the Fair Play award from the 2004/05 European Championship on behalf of the French Football Federation following the exemplary behaviour of the hosts, and eventual winners, at the finals in the Loire region.
Tough tests The 12 pools threw up a number of potentially exciting propositions, with Northern Ireland – who qualified for the finals in France – facing Serbia and Montenegro, Malta and Lithuania in Group 1. Ukraine, who also reached the 2004 final tournament, face a stern task to progress from Group 2, which also includes Italy, Latvia and the Republic of Ireland.

Two favourites The 2003 winners, Portugal, will be confident of progressing from Group 5 along with Germany, although San Marino and the Faroe Islands will be seeking to spring a surprise. Iceland, the Czech Republic, Andorra and Sweden make up Group 6, while Finland and Greece face off against Slovakia and Bosnia-Herzegovina in Group 7.
No room for error Moldova, Poland, Liechtenstein and Norway will contest a tough-looking Group 8, while Turkey will be seeking to repeat their fine form at youth level in recent years against Croatia, Romania and F.Y.R. Macedonia in Group 9.
Hopes high Hungary and Scotland, who were ranked in the first pot for the draw, must overcome Albania and Cyprus to qualify from Group 10, while the Netherlands and Denmark, Group 11's top two, play Slovenia and Belarus. Finally, Wales, Switzerland, Kazakhstan and Estonia make up Group 12.
'My big chance' "It's a great honour for me to be involved in this draw," said Rak. "I was chosen because I have an exemplary record at my club, and I am here as their representative. I have already played for Switzerland's U20 side against Croatia, Italy and Germany, we have qualified for next year's [FIFA] World Youth Cup in the Netherlands and I hope to be involved in that of course. It's a great opportunity for me, it's my big chance."

Bulgaria, Croatia, Iceland and Bosnia-Herzegovina must fight it out for Group 11's two automatic qualifying berths, while Serbia and Montenegro and Ukraine will look to overpower Armenia and Latvia in Group 12.
First-team chances "This team marks the promotion of those players who were champions at U17 level," said France's technical director Luc Rabat. "It will be the same group of players, although there may be a problem with selection as the likes of [Hatem] Ben Arfa, [Jérémy] Menez and [Samir] Nasri are already playing for their club's first teams. The aim is to repeat what we did at the U17 finals, although obviously we must take into account the difficulty of the competition. It's a good draw for us, we have avoided the big sides, so, although we will take the group seriously, it looks promising."

De Kuip beckons for Bandalovski Friday, 3 December 2004 PFC Litex Lovech defender Ivan Bandalovski has agreed an 18-month contract with Feyenoord, with the possibility of an extension when the inital deal expires.
Medical tests The 18-year-old had medical tests at the club yesterday and will join Ruud Gullit's side after the winter break after emerging as a major star in the first half of the season in Bulgaria. No transfer fee has been revealed although reports in the Bulgarian press suggest an initial fee of €600,000 with Litex also receiving 30 per cent of the fee if Bandalovski moves on from Feyenoord.
Notable scout The transfer is the first fruit of Feyenoord's relationship with former Bulgaria forward Andrey Zhelyazkov, a favourite at De Kuip in the 1980s. Zhelyazkov was the first Bulgarian to win a league title in a foreign league when he tok the 1983/84 Dutch title with Feyenoord and is now helping the club as a scout in eastern Europe, with a particular focus on Bulgaria.
International debut Bandalovski, who started his career as a trainee at Bulgarian giants PFC Levski Sofia, is the captain of his country's Under-19 team and recently made his debut for the U21s. He has made just ten appearances in the Bulgarian A PFG, but having played in three UEFA Cup games earlier this season, he will not be eligible to play in Europe for Feyenoord until next season. The transfer will not be formalised until the window reopens in January.

Hristov back with Bulgaria Friday, 3 December 2004 VfL Wolfsburg midfield player Marian Hristov has been recalled by Bulgaria coach Hristo Stoitchkov for their exhibition game against Spanish regional side Valenciana on 28 December. Hristov missed Bulgaria's last two FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Croatia and Malta with a knee injury and also the recent friendlies against Azerbaijan and Egypt. Stoitchkov, who has not tasted defeat in his six games in charge, has called up all his major players other than rested PFC Levski Sofia goalkeeper Dimitar Ivankov.
Birmingham City FC defender Martin Grainger has retired from football due to persistent knee problems. The 32-year-old has been with the club since joining from Brentford FC in 1996, and six years later helped Birmingham into the English Premiership, where they remain. However, injury has since overtaken ex-Colchester United FC player Grainger, who was loaned to Coventry City FC last year.
Former Norwegian international Bård Borgersen has returned to his homeland after leaving Danish Superliga club Aalborg BK for lower division side IK Start of Kristianssand, where the 32-year-old central defender began his career. Borgersen's current contract with AaB was valid until the summer of 2006, but the North Jutland club have agreed to let him go in the new year. "We have been very happy with Bård on as well as off the pitch," said AaB sports director Lynge Jacobsen. "The reason we have allowed him to go was a desire from him and his family to return to Kristianssand. We never wanted to stand in the way of that wish."
Hungarian side MTK Hungária FC have had one point deducted for failing to pay former coach Sándor Egervári his wages. The Hungarian Football League said that if the club had not paid up by the end of the winter break, they would have a further point deducted for each match until Egervari was recompensed. The 2002/03 Hungarian champions parted company with Egervári in June and he joined Vasas SC in late October. MTK are fifth in the NB I table.

Adriano enters top ten Monday, 6 December 2004 FC Internazionale Milano forward Adriano has made his move into the top ten of the ESM Golden Shoe rankings, jumping 18 places with a weekend hat-trick.
Henry double Adriano struck three times in Inter's 5-0 victory against FC Messina Peloro on Saturday while the same day saw last season's winner Thierry Henry score twice in Arsenal FC's 3-0 win against Birmingham City FC. Both men are now in fifth place in the standings with their 13 goals apiece translating into 26 points, level with 1. FC Nürnberg striker Marek Mintal who scored once in his side's 2-2 draw with FC Bayern München.
Eto'o closing Close behind the trio, who are all now within striking distance of Wisla Kraków's Tomasz Frankowski in top spot, is FC Barcelona hit-man Samuel Eto'o. The Cameroonian international scored twice in Barça's 4-0 win at Málaga CF to make it 12 goals for the season.

Re: Bułgarskie Wiadomości Pilkarskie [ENG] UEFA.com
Giants level at half-time Tuesday, 7 December 2004 By Stoyan Georgiev
Capital rivals PFC CSKA Sofia and PFC Levski Sofia enter the winter break neck and neck, topping the Bulgarian Premier League with 39 points apiece.
Honours even Two wins and a draw in their latest games saw the traditional rivals go into Christmas with honours even, although had Levski been able to score from the penalty spot in their final match of 2004, things could have been different.
Missed penalties With CSKA drawing 0-0 at home to title-holders PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv, Levski had two chances to break the deadlock in their game at PFC Cherno More Varna. However, both Daniel Borimirov and Dimitar Ivankov had late penalties saved by Cherno More goalkeeper Ivailo Petrov.
Lokomotiv lagging Surprise champions last season, Lokomotiv need a major change of fortunes to reclaim their crown. While they are third in the table, Eduard Eranosyan's men are nine points behind the Sofia giants despite winning the two matches preceding their draw against CSKA.
Slavia talent PFC Slavia Sofia lie in fourth despite the departure of coach Ratko Dostanic who took over at Serbia and Montenegro's FK Crvena Zvezda back in September. His replacement, Atanas Dzhambazki, has two of Bulgaria's brightest prospects in Chavdar Yankov and Blagoi Georgiev, and a European finish remains a possibility.
Litex misery However, such an achievement may be beyond PFC Litex Lovech's new coach Itzhak Shum. The 2003/04 Bulgarian Cup winners were expected to challenge for the title, but after a poor start, club president Grisha Ganchev hopes the former Panathinaikos FC coach can restore some pride in the spring.
Relegation scramble Litex are fifth, but below them all is chaos, with just eight points separating the bottom ten teams in the division. The managerial turnover has been high with six of the 16 top-flight clubs having changed coaches since the start of the campaign.
Young stars The young stars of the season have been Levski's Mariyan Ognyanov, Slavia's Dimitar Rangelov and Litex full-back Ivan Bandalovski, who has already agreed a move to Feyenoord. Meanwhile, Loko Plovdiv's Martin Kamburov is topping the scoring charts with 15 goals.
Surprise achiever However, the man in second place - CSKA midfielder Hristo Yanev - is something of a surprise. A free-kick expert, the 25-year-old has struck 12 goals, having also scored twice in four games for Bulgaria since his debut against the Republic of Ireland in August.

Montella enters Christmas top ten Monday, 20 December 2004 Vincenzo Montella moved into the top ten of the ESM Golden Shoe standings this weekend as holder Thierry Henry was all but confirmed as the Christmas leader.
Henry ahead Montella struck in AS Roma's emphatic 5-1 win against Parma FC on Sunday to join Samuel Eto'o on 24 points. Henry did not score for Arsenal FC against Portsmouth FC, but will only be deprived of his current outright lead before Christmas if Eto'o strikes a hat-trick in FC Barcelona's meeting with UD Levante on Tuesday. Henry will then be able to respond in England's busy holiday programme of four matches in a fortnight.
Tekke climb continues Meanwhile, Trabzonspor's Fatih Tekke has continued his surge up the rankings. Having moved up from 53rd to 21st place a week ago with a hat-trick against Samsunspor, he opened the scoring on Saturday in a 1-1 draw with Istanbulspor and now lies in joint-12th. Pos

Bulgarian accolade boosts Berbatov Monday, 20 December 2004 Bayer 04 Leverkusen striker Dimitar Berbatov has won the Bulgarian Player of the Year award for a second time in three years.
Second award Berbatov, who also won the award in 2002, continued his rich goalscoring form for club and country in the current calendar year and won the award convincingly having collected 439 points in a poll of 159 football journalists. US Lecce's Valeri Bozhinov finished second on 221 points while 187 points left VfL Wolfsburg's Martin Petrov third. UD Levante forward Vladimir Manchev came fourth, while 2003 winner Stilian Petrov, of Celtic FC, shared fifth position with Wolfsburg's Marian Hristov.
Crucial contributions "I would like to thank my colleagues in the national team and my club Leverkusen," said Berbatov, whose goals have been invaluable in propelling the German side to the first knockout round of the UEFA Champions League and Bulgaria to second place in FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 8. "It is thanks to their help I am winning this award."
Stoitchkov success Hristo Stoitchkov collected the coach of the year award having taken over as national team coach after Bulgaria lost all three games at UEFA EURO 2004™. Stoitchkov remains unbeaten after six matches in charge, with Bulgaria taking seven points from their first three World Cup qualifiers.
'Only the start' However, he played down this achievement. "It is too early for me to win such awards," said the former FC Barcelona striker. "This is only the start for me and the boys from the national team. I will be even happier if I retain the award after 12 months. That will mean we have done our job and managed to qualify for the World Cup finals in 2006."
Domestic awards A number of players from the Bulgarian Premier League were also recognized, with PFC Levski Sofia duo Dimitar Ivankov and Elin Topuzakov winning the awards for best goalkeeper and defender respectively. PFC CSKA Sofia's Hristo Yanev was voted midfield player of the year, while PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv's Martin Kamburov won the strikers' award. PFC Slavia Sofia midfield player Chavdar Yankov took the prize for most improved player.

Vingada accepts Académica post Thursday, 23 December 2004 Nelo Vingada has been unveiled as the new coach of relegation-threatened Portuguese side A. Académica de Coimbra, replacing João Carlos Pereira who left the club by mutual consent on Wednesday. Vingada has signed a contract until the end of the season with the option for a further season, having guided Zamalek to the Egyptian league title in his last coaching post. "It's a great challenge," said Vingada, whose only previously head coaching role in Portugal was with CS Marítimo, although he has worked as assistant coach to the national team, SL Benfica and Académica. "Our goal is to escape from relegation, and to do that we will need the help of everybody: players, club and supporters."
Marsaxlokk FC striker Jamie Pace has been recalled to the Malta squad for Wednesday's friendly against an Andalucia XI in Seville. The 27-year-old striker has been out of the squad since October 2003, and is among the new faces in the squad along with defenders Alex Muscat and Kenneth Spiteri, and midfield player Cleavan Frendo, promoted from the under-21 side along with forward Trevor Cilia. Luke Dimech, Stefan Giglio, Claude Mattocks, Kevin Sammut, Antoine Zahra I and Michael Mifsud are all rested while defender Ian Ciantar is injured.
Odense BK have awarded joint coaches Troels Bech and Klavs Rasmussen new contracts until 1 July 2006. The pair took charge of the Danish Superleague club earlier this year after Uffe Pedersen stepped down for personal reasons and have subsequently guided the club to fourth place in the Danish top flight. "Troels and Klavs possess the qualities we would like our coaches to have," said OB director Kim Brink.
Also in Denmark, Tobias Grahn is joining club AGF Århus on a three-year contract, valid from new year. The 24-year-old Swedish midfield player, who has previously represented Norway's Vålerenga IF and Danish outfit Lyngby BK, joined AGF on loan and helped his new club to six place in the Danish top flight at the winter break.
Bulgarian Premier League leaders PFC CSKA Sofia have signed Brazilian Tiago Silva from PFC Litex Lovech. The 25-year-old midfield player has agreed a three-year deal and, when he joins his new team in early 2005, will be reunited with former Litex coach Ferario Spasov, now in charge of CSKA. "This signing is a Christmas gift for our fans," said CSKA's technical director Stefan Ormandzhiev. "We were looking for a player of such high quality. We are glad to have him."
Albanian international Fatmir Vata has signed a new contract with DSC Arminia Bielefeld, tying him to the club until 2007. The 33-year-old midfield player joined Arminia in 2001 and featured 16 times in the first half of the current Bundesliga season, scoring three goals.
UEFA Cup contenders FC Sochaux-Montbéliard have been eliminated from the French League Cup on penalties by SM Caen, who had goalkeeper Vincent Planté to thank with two shoot-out saves after a goalless 120 minutes of action. AJ Auxerre, another UEFA Cup hopeful, were pushed all the way by FC Nantes Atlantique but Benoît Cheyrou’s late winner gave Auxerre a 2-1 victory. Fittingly, Auxerre will meet Caen in the quarter-finals, while RC Lens will play AS Saint-Etienne. The other two ties will see Ligue 2 sides Clermont FA and Montpellier Hérault SC away at RC Strasbourg and at home against AS Monaco FC respectively.

Re: Bułgarskie Wiadomości Pilkarskie [ENG] UEFA.com
Give a little whistle Tuesday, 28 December 2004 Love them or hate them, it would not be much of a game without them. Referees may be controversial figures in some quarters, but at uefa.com, we cannot get enough of them.
Steady stream Not least because they have provided us with such a steady stream of stories in the last 12 months. It all started last December with the phenomenal tale of Dutch referee Ben Haverkort, who made a decisive contribution to FC Twente's game against Feyenoord.
Twente penalty Having awarded a penalty to Twente, which was converted by Sjaak Polak, Feyenoord goalkeeper Patrick Lodewijks handed the ball to the referee with the stinging accusation: "Here is your ball, as it is your match."
Tongue out However, he was completely taken aback by Haverkort's response. "He showed me his tongue, not one time, but maybe six or seven times," said Lodewijks. "When my daughter does this at home, I send her to her room immediately."
Uilenberg shocked Dutch refereeing chief Jaap Uilenberg was as shocked by Haverkort's actions as Lodewijks, and issued a public rebuke to the referee saying: "His reaction was absolutely incorrect, and cannot be justified. Patrick and Ben have spoken about it like adults since."
South African tale Such a reconciliation was not possible in a match in South Africa, when the coach of the Marcelle club in Kenton-on-Sea in Eastern Cape province remonstrated with the referee, after the official showed one of his players a yellow card.
Gun play "The referee felt threatened when the other team approached him because they were angry," explained inspector Mali Govender of Grahamstown police, "so he pulled out a gun and killed the coach of the visiting team."
Jeep chase Such a tragedy was narrowly averted in Moldova recently, after a second division game between AC Roso Floreni and AC Politechnica Chisinau was interrupted when Roso's president drove his jeep on to the field and began to chase the referee.
Lengthy ban Having watched referee Vitalie Onica give Politechnica a penalty which they converted, Mihai Macovei saw red, started up his motor and began a high speed pursuit of the official which has, unsurprisingly, earned him a ban until the end of the season.
Mitigating argument "I've had enough of these refs, you just can't stand idly by anymore," he explained afterwards. "You have to do something to stop this. I didn't punch or threaten him. I didn't harm anybody."
Wedding bells We have had some positive stories about refereeing too. There was the one about Romanian official Augustus Constantin who got special permission to officiate at a Friday match, so that he could get married in peace the following day.
Lottery winner And them there was Bulgarian referee Hristo Ristoskov who won €45,000 in the state lottery back in April. "I have been taking part in the Bulgarian state lottery every week with the same numbers for almost ten years," he said. "I wish everyone could have such a moment."
Naked refereeing However, most officials would prefer not to have a moment like the one that befell Belgian official Jacky Temmerman as he officiated the game between Youngs Stars Eeklo and FC Zelzate, when a fan ran on to the pitch and pulled down Temmerman's shorts and underpants.
'Another idiot' "I looked very nice in front of a few hundred supporters - that man made a fool of me," fumed the referee. "I will never dare to show up for another match. They can look for another idiot who is prepared to stand with his ass naked for €20 a game."

Ivankov not leaving Levski Tuesday, 28 December 2004 Bulgaria goalkeeper Dimitar Ivankov has pledged his future to the Premier League high-fliers PFC Levski Sofia. The 29-year-old international has signed a one-year extension to his existing deal that will keep him at the club until 30 June 2006. Levski are joint-top of the table, level on 39 points with PFC CSKA Sofia although with an inferior goal difference.
Turkish side Gençlerbirligi SK, who are ninth in the Superleague, have appointed former Trabzonspor coach Ziya Dogan to lead them in the second half of the season. Dogan has agreed an 18-month contract and has already stated his ambition to win the title next season. He added: “For this purpose, we have to build a squad that can compete.” Dogan left Trabzonspor in November after a poor run of results.
Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven have loaned two youngsters to second division sides. The 19-year-old striker Tim Janssen has signed a contract with FC Zwolle for the rest of the season, although is then likely to return to Eindhoven. The 23-year-old defender Leon Hese has agreed an 18-month contract with Helmond Sport, having just recovered from a serious knee injury. Hese’s contract with PSV had been due to expire next summer.
1. FC Kaiserslautern have parted company with midfielder Thomas Drescher after the player and club agreed to terminate his contract. Drescher, who was under contract in Kaiserslautern until the summer of 2006, will leave the top flight to join SV Wacker Burghausen, where he has signed a contract that will tie him to the 2. Bundesliga side until the summer of 2007.
Rangers FC have completed signing of Bojan Djordjic from Manchester United FC on a six-month contract. The 22-year-old Belgrade-born Swedish winger has agreed the initial deal with an option of a further two years if the move to Scotland works out. "This is a big opportunity and I am delighted with the move," said Djordic. "I always wanted to represent a big club at first-team level." Djordjic moved to Old Trafford in 1999 but made just two appearances for United and had been on loan with Sheffield Wednesday FC, AGF Århus and FK Crvena Zvezda before coming to Ibrox.
Norwegian side Vålerenga IF, who will compete in qualifying for the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League, have signed the 21-year-old midfielder Christian Grindheim from FK Haugesund. Grindheim had interested most of the clubs in the Tippeligaen, and had looked likely to join Viking FK before the clubs failed to agree a price. Vålerenga stepped in and secured the player's services for a fee of €430,000.

Bulgaria end year on a high Wednesday, 29 December 2004 Bulgaria have increased their undefeated run to seven games since the post-UEFA EURO 2004™ appointment of Hristo Stoitchkov after defeating Spanish province Valenciana last night. Forwards Dimitar Berbatov and Vladimir Manchev scored on 18 and 57 minutes respectively to put Bulgaria in control, and Stoyan Kolev saved a penalty from Javi Moreno 12 minutes from the end. Moreno did claim a consolation in the last minute but victory for the visitors to Valencia had been sealed.
Defender José Fortes Rodriguez has ended a decade-long spell at AZ Alkmaar to join Eredivisie rivals RBC Roosendaal. The 32-year-old Spaniard, Alkmaar captain until last season, has signed a contract until the end of this season with an option for a further two years.
Struggling French side FC Nantes Atlantique have signed Malian striker Mamadou Diallo from Algerian club USM Alger - with Gabonese striker Shiva N'Zigou making way. Diallo, 22, joins for a €700,000 fee and has signed a six-month deal, that could be extended until the end of the 2007/08 season. "I know that Nantes are struggling at the moment," said Daillo. "I hope everything will be back in order for the second half of the season and that I can lend a hand." Meanwhile, 21-year-old N'Zigou has been loaned to Ligue 2 side FC Gueugnon having played just six top-flight games this term.
DSC Arminia Bielefeld sporting director Thomas von Heesen has signed a new contract keeping him at the Bundesliga club until summer 2006. Arminia president Hans-Hermann Schwick said: “Thomas von Heesen is largely responsible for the positive development of the club and we are happy to have signed a new deal."
Italian full-back Paolo Vanoli will leave Scottish Premier League side Rangers FC during the January transfer window. The 32-year-old former Parma FC and ACF Fiorentina defender has been negotiating an amicable release from his contract.
Elsewhere in Scotland, Aberdeen FC goalkeeper David Preece, has been ruled out for six weeks with a broken finger. The Englishman's deputy, locally-born Ryan Esson, kept a clean sheet in Tuesday's 0-0 draw with Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC.
